Q&A With Designer Ralph Benitez
Q&A With Designer Ralph Benitez
Ralph designed the ‘55 Chevy Panel die-cast in this series. “It’s a nod to the rusty beat-up old Chevy Suburban (looks the same but with windows) that my dad would drop me off to school in. He thought he was embarrassing me, but I thought it was the coolest thing. My favorite cars are old school Chevys and VWs, because it’s what I grew up around at my dad’s auto repair shop.”

"As a kid, I spent my weekends at my dad’s shop, and skateboarding with my older brother and his friends the rest of the time. This was the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, before the era of ‘skate parks’ and ‘extreme sports.’ It was way more visceral back then, and brutal, because we were seen as troublemakers by everyone. But we were just looking for a place to park our homemade ramps and get some air.”

"As kids, we used to skate from Inglewood to Venice Beach and watch all of the LA skate legends do their thing. It was epic! After, we would skate down the street to buy warped decks for 10 bucks. So the deco on the passenger side and roof is a fictitious skate shop that I would’ve owned, and that’s me doing a ‘frontside air’ off a ramp. The deco on the driver’s side says ‘Ralph’s Beat Shop’ – I also make music and beats as a hobby.”
