Wilma Mankiller was the first-ever female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation and a fierce advocate for Native American, women’s, and children’s rights. In 1998, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Now, she is the newest doll in the Barbie Inspiring Women series. Just like the iconic photograph of Wilma, the doll is carrying a basket and wearing a richly pigmented dress with striping to represent the four compass directions.

SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIOR
We’re honored to bring Native American and women’s rights activist Wilma Mankiller to the Barbie Inspiring Women series.
BEHIND THE DESIGN
Designer Carlyle Nuera took inspiration from an iconic photo of Wilma to emulate the richly pigmented turquoise dress and woven basket she carries.
THE DETAILS
The ribbon striping on her dress represents the four directions: north, south, east, and west. These symbolize Wilma’s commitment to all people throughout the world.
